Best deal in video game history! 5 games in one box!
I have been a fan of Half Life, so I knew I would get this for Xbox 360. (I prefer playing games on consoles.) I was also curious about the other games in this package. There is one disc...when you put it in the 360 a main menu comes up with five choices across the bottom of the screen...1. Half Life 2, 2. Half Life 2 Episode One, 3. Half Life 2 Episode Two, 4. Portal and 5. Team Fortress 2. That's right 5 games! One disc. One box. $59.99! Great deal.Half Life 2 appears to be much better looking graphically than the original Xbox version...there are not as many glitches either. The backwards compatible version had quite a few bugs that made playing the game on the 360 quite annoying. Not to worry here. The game play is smooth and quite comparable to the PC version. The bonus here of course is that you have both Episodes One and Two to move on with after completing Half Life 2...or you can play just Episode One or Two. You don't have to solve one to play the...

Orange Box, Black Box, whatever! It's all good!
I should mention up front that I'm a PC gamer, and that while there are some here that might hold that against me (you console folks can be brutal) I'm going to give as honest a review of the Orange Box games as I can. Given that Valve's release coincided with some catastrophic malfunction of my wife's car, the funds I had set aside for this game for my PC ended up getting sucked up into car repairs, thus I was forced to play this on my brother's Xbox 360. And that said I thoroughly enjoyed the Xbox version, much to my surprise, even without a mouse and keyboard to aim and shoot with.Orange Box includes the original Half Life 2, and it's subsequent followups Episodes 1 and 2. In addition it contains the quirky spatial-puzzle game Portal, and as icing on the cake Team Fortress 2. To get these separately (at least on PC) would run in the realm of $250, more or less, and to get all 5 games in one bundle for all of $60 is too good to be true. On to the actual reviews...

Best Game Compilation Ever!
Not only is this game the best value in console history, with 5 quality titles, its also includes some of the most innovative first-person game play design as well. I'll review each title:Half-Life 2 (4.5/5) - Probably the single best 1-player first person shooter ever made, definitely for the PC. I played this game on the PC and it gets a perfect 5/5 there. The console version gets a 0.5 star deduction if only because the 360 controller proves to be slightly less adept than the mouse/keyboard combo. Combat is fine because they've added some auto aim to compensate, but often times you'll find yourself strafing back and forth at doorways, in order to line up correctly and get through. But the absolute worst is the vehicle control. Halo is the only FPS I've played that got vehicle control right, but HL2 is bound by the rule of never leaving Gordon Freeman's eyes, and so driving must be done first-person. But the driving segments are relatively short, given the total length...

In a word: Perfect!
I stopped keeping time after 2am so I can't be sure what hour it is, nor can I tell you when I ran out of the cannister of Malt Balls and Peanut M&M's I brought as supplementation. What I can tell you however (in the humble opinion of a dedicated PC gamer for 15 years), is that Half Life 2 is the the most mind blowing game I've ever played.I was at E3 with my pyscho gaming buddy cleaning the Pizza flavored drool off his chin when we got a preview of HL2. Like most, I counted the days, cursed Valve and Sierra for delay after delay, put all my faith and hope into Doom 3, was underwhelmed, went back to playing Desert Combat...basically went insane with anticipation. In the brief moments before firing up HL2 for the first time, I was hopeful, but expecting to be dissapointed. And I was.Really, no multi-player! I'm one of those that have an absolute allergy to single-player games. Small beads of angry sweat began to form on my back...

Disappointing so far
I'm, sure that once I get the BS online registration done it'll be great, I'm giving it 3 stars for potential. I tried to do it at work on our T-1 but their server froze or something and the download locked up and I couldn't complete it. I have no idea why someone at steam or Valve thought this was agood idea. They should be fired.I am annoyed and angry, I just want to play my game, at home in single player mode. There is no reason for having to do this online thing...I guess they have need to load some spyware on my maching first?

Product Description

Half-Life 2 delivers a new level of realistic action and excitement. Players return to the world of Gordon Freeman, as he returns to the Black Mesa research facility. The aliens are pouring into our world, and Freeman becomes part of a resistance group to stop them. New weapons, new enemies and new characters are waiting -- along with major enhancements in animation, artificial intelligence and graphics. Top to learn more

In many ways, creating a sequel to Half-Life is an unenviable task. After all, the goal is to craft not just any ordinary game, but an improvement to a title that is widely considered to be the high water mark for first person shooters. Fortunately, Valve does not disappoint on their sophomore effort.

Half-Life 2 picks up exactly where its predecessor leaves off, with gamers stepping once more into Gordon Freeman's HVAC suit as he awakes at some indeterminate time in the future, now apparently in the employ of the mysterious G-Man. Humanity has been sold out to alien forces, and your job is to escape their thrall and lead the resistance to victory.

HL2's key successes are in a few critical areas, the first of which is the new physics & graphics engine, called Source. People and objects fall, fly, tip over, float, and break in an extraordinarily realistic fashion, and in-game puzzles often require you to use simple applications of physics to progress. Second, an elaborate facial structure system coupled with excellent voice acting make for some of the most believably human NPCs in gaming history. This is no small thing; you will find yourself actually caring about the characters who surround you, even those that are normally regarded as cannon fodder. Third, the level design exhibits a subtle brilliance, which frequently fools you into feeling like you're making your way through an organic environment and not a forced linear path. These elements combine to form one of the most truly immersive experiences ever captured on a PC.

This gaming bliss comes at a cost, however. If your computer isn't running the latest and greatest hardware, you may find yourself turning down a lot of the slick graphics to keep the machine from choking. Also, at the time of this writing the only two bundled multiplayer games are a barely updated version of Counter-Strike and HL2 DeathMatch. Counter-Strike: Source is every bit as fun as the original, but the DeathMatch is lackluster and contains only a handful of uninspired maps.

Overall, Half-Life 2 is a smashing success, every bit worthy of the prestige and respect that the franchise has been awarded. This is absolutely a game that every computer gaming enthusiast is going to want to have in their collection. -- Jon "Safety Monkey" Grover

Pros:

  • Advanced graphics and physics system provide highly immersive experience
  • Believable, expressive non-player characters
  • Fun, realistic level design
Cons:
  • Requires a very fast computer to play with all bells & whistles on
  • DeathMatch mode has few maps and is not terribly entertaining

best. game. EVER.
if ever there was a reason to own an xbox, half-life 2 is that reason. let me begin by throwing you some details-half life 2 is a port of the pc hit of the same name that blew pc gamers and critics away last year. ports of pc games are usually edited in some way to fit on consoles due to memory, framerate, graphics, etc.... half life 2 is ported to xbox in its ENTIRETY! the fact that valve (hl2's creators) were able to do this is reason for applause not only because of making this happen from a tech perspective, but because people without high-end computers can now experience this awesome, immersive and frightening world!half-life 2 takes place some time after the events of the original, throwing main character Gordon Freeman into an almost Orwellian world where human beings are herded from one place to another like cattle to benefit an unknown means. Gordon is instantly recognized by an underground resistance- and hours of interactive story, brilliant...

Excellent translation from the PC to XBox but...
First off, I won't go into the story. That has already been established via the PC game. What I want to review here is, how well did this make it's translation from PC to Xbox and is it worth if for those who have already played it on PC.Well, everything you knew and loved in the PC is here, except for on-line multi-player mode. THAT is the one reason this game is rated 4. So, if you've already played the PC version, there is NO reason to pick up this version. However, if you're like me who has a PC that met the bare minimum requirements to play Half-Life 2 on, and you own an Xbox, you can be rest assured you will experience pretty much the same joy as the PC people, except for multiplayer. If you've never played Half-Life 2 before, you are missing out on the experience of a lifetime. As far as other games converted to XBox from PC are concerned, this is hands-down the BEST conversion yet. Doom 3 from the PC was an awesome translation. The graphics and the...

Half-Life, FULL game
The only way to give the XBOX version of this game less than five stars is to have played the PC version of the game. I've read reviews (Gamespot specifically) that talk about near abysmal framerate/slowdown drops... to the point of freezing the system. that's cold, man. and, umm, dead wrong. I have a feeling someone over there reviewed an unfinished product. The game is not flawless. It does have load times every so often (7-10 seconds) but not as bad as Gamespot says (20-40 second load times). I question the validity of what they were reviewing. I've never played FPS on PC and I don't doubt it's better. But I understand to play Half Life 2 on a PC fluidly requires thousands in upgrades, etc. It's just not worth it to me. That's a lot of beer I could be drinking, money to be gambling.Anyway, Half Life 2 is just SUCH a playable game. The environments are really stunning. It starts in a train station where you soon learn that this world is throat under boot, a...

Nothing rhymes with Orange...
They say nothing rhymes with Orange... but what about PWNage!? I guess that doesn't either. But it should! This game rocks!Team Fortress 2 is worth the price of admission for this instant classic collection. The team play is deep and instant. You really find people pairing up as medic and heavy to mow down a field of scouts and engineer turrets. Or people switching classes to fill in a defensive gap. THe healer class is greta fun as is the support engineer. They game is very well balanced with each class able to counter another. The voice acting is hilarious and the charater models are gorgeous. This game will be played years to come, as the graphics are so highly stylized they will age with grace. The depth of each player class and the differing play modes make for a truly engrossing experience. Mix in some achievements, point capturing, Steam's new robust online community, in-game VOIP and you have a stellar game experience worth $50 alone. But wait theres...

Great Collection To Those New to Half Life 2
The Orange Box and its games have gotten over a hundred rewards, and for good reason. Considering that the collection is now on Amazon for $30, I highly recommend that you get this collection ifA) You're a fan of FPS gameplayB) You don't already have the gamesHalf Life 2, by and large, is a great game. The story is great, the action intense, and it definitely has plenty of great moments. If you're skeptical, I suggest downloading the Half Life 2 demo and trying the game out.Graphically, there's not much to complain about. It is not Crysis, but considering the age of the game, I wouldn't be surprised. It runs smoothly on my system (Athlon 64 3700, 2 gigs DDR 400 ram, Geforce 6800 GT 256 mb videocard).Gameplay wise, as mentioned before, the game has plenty of good moments, though I don't see it as much of a breakthrough to me. The game gets better and more immersible in the included expansion packs however.Portal is...

Great package for those who are new to HL2
Okay, so I'll admit to being one of the five people that hasn't even touched Half Life 2 until now. I did play through the original Half Life, and its difficulty (especially in the later stages) was a bit of a turn-off. Personally, I think that when the game practically necessitates cheating to complete it, it's a bit too much. That said, seeing this bundle on the store shelf was a bit too good of a deal to pass up, so I picked it up.First impressions on the game design- the physics is more heavily involved in gameplay than in any other shooter before or since. In fact, in many cases the gameplay seems to FOCUS on the physics, not on killing enemies. To underscore this, you can actually finish most of the game with only the gravity gun, which (except in rare cases) can't kill anything directly but can pick up objects to throw at enemies. This is an interesting departure from the norm, but there are times when I think they took it a bit too far. Typically, you'll start off...

This game is AWESOME, don't believe the bad press.
The Good:The Orange Box for PS3 is an outstanding purchase for any Half Life fan or for those that wanted to play HL2 but didn't have a PC that could run it. This package comes with 5 games which give roughly 30 hours of single player gameplay and infinite online multiplayer.Included are the titles: Half Life 2, HL2: Episode 1, HL2: Episode 2, Portal, and Team Fortress 2. I have played through all five titles and can say that, on the whole, this is a very good port to the PS3. It has enhanced Hi-Definition graphics and the whole package has a very cool vibe to it.Half Life 2 and the two expansion episodes are basically intellectual First Person Shooters with a huge emphasis on puzzle solving. HL2 was named game of the year by over 50 gaming publications when it was released. This version is better looking and is almost like playing the game for the first time. Portal is an insanely fun puzzle game where you shoot two portals onto walls and then warp...

Ignore all the badmouthing, this game on the PS3 is good
I have played the whole of the Orange Box on 3 systems: a midrange system from a few years ago (Pentium 4, nVidia 7300GTS video card), a brand new system (Intel Core 2 Quad, nVidia 8800GT video card), and the PS3. I have seen the XBox 360 version, but I have not played it myself, so I won't pass judgement.I will say this: I hate all the complaining about the PS3 version, with everyone comparing it to the other versions. Yes, EA is a horrible game developer, with substandard ports, and Valve should not have handed the Orange Box off to them. Yes, because of this, the PS3 version suffers, both graphically (no 1080p options), and with some drops in framerate (most notably in parts of Episode 2). But the problem with this sort of reviewing is that it is not objective to this game on this system, and deters people from an amazing gaming experience. The Orange Box is one of the most amazing gaming experiences and gaming values you can get. I don't feel any need to...

Best Game Package I've Ever Owned - - Portal Blew My Mind
I bought this game despite some reviewers saying there were frame rate slow downs etc, and I'm so glad I did. This isn't the best PS3 game out (that goes to Uncharted in my book) but this is my number 2 PS3 game. There are five games included in this package, and each one is mind blowingly good. Portal is the most unique game experience I've had in a long time, and Portal alone is something every gamer should experience. Then there's the Half-Life 2 series, which includes three variations of that game basically, and countless hours of content. The atmosphere and story is excellent, and again unique. The nice thing about these games is that the story is all told by the things other people say to you, and the things that happen in the environment. This is true of Portal as well. The fact that your character doesn't talk makes it feel more like it's you in the game, and it allows you to have your own thoughts/reactions to what's being said and done, without...

Greatest game ever made. Period.
If you love first person shooters, this game is a MUST HAVE. The story is great, the AI of friendly NPCs is superb (they're actually helpful and get out of your way when you're trying to move around or shoot) and the AI of enemy NPCs is no less impressive. The physics and graphics are so realistic that you truly feel like you're there (which can be frightening at times).I've played dozens of FPS games over the years, this is the best hands down. The graphics and sound effects are awesome, and the gameplay is even better. The storyline keeps the game moving, and there is never a dull moment. They even manage to add a good bit of humor throughtout the game that will leave you laughing. (listen for Barney to mention the cat) It took them 6 years to make this game, and all the effort put into creating this game shows.PROSWell-rounded weapon selection (I love the .357 revolver)Gravity Gun - you can pick up nearly anything and use it as ammo...

You'd be hard-pressed to find a person who isn't a fan of the gameplay and storyline of Half-Life. Half-Life two is regrettably an inferior story, but is still thoroughly engaging. GREAT FPS! Steam is a PITA, but otherwise ...
Except for Steam, I'd call this about the best fps I've ever played. The artwork is fabulous, and the motion, the weapons, vehicles, overall responsiveness and realism is first rate. And the story line, while not the very best, is a realistic vehicle for a genuine message, like a good video game should be. Because this is a great work of art here, folks. The overall theme of this game is of the rebellion, taking place around the world right now, of humanity against post-humanity. Kind of ironic since anybody educated and wealthy enough to possess the game and a computer to play it on is probably pretty good posthuman material anyway. But that's what it's all about. (Same with "Prey," really, but the Doom engine s#cks by comparison.) In the game it's all about a violent underground conspiracy against faceless half-human mandroids, who are gradually turning all humans into faceless creeps; where in real life it's all about disorganized lo-tech cults, or tribes, or ethnic...
