'Behold the Sea Itself...'
Walt Whitman's strophe to the ocean could well be applied to this exciting book that captures the noise, the majesty, and the seduction of the sea - with a special emphasis on the waves. Writer Steve Hawk is a committed wave-rider and has collected a varied group of photographs of the challenging waves that seem at once threatening and exhilarating: the viewer can easily imagine the constant call of the sea to surfers within these pages.Just as there is an infinite variety of ocean waves, both at sea and as the waves meet the shore, so is there a spectrum of photographs here, photographs that surprise not only in the obvious challenge of those who captured them, but also in the spectrum of colors that light and wind and mists alter their beauty and majesty. The photographers include the well known such as Art Brewer, Wayne Levin, Jeff Divine, Wayne Levin, and Joel Meyerowitz as well as lesser well-known but equally impressive artists. The locations for the photographs...

Product Description

Any ocean lover knows the transformative power of the ocean wave and its perfect confluence of energy, water, and light. Waves offers a mesmerizing collection of photography that explores the many faces of the singular ocean wave, whether it is the quiet rush of a crystalline wavelet over tropical sand or the deadly slam of storm surf against Oregon cliffs. Former editor of Surfer magazine, Steve Hawk has selected photographs from New Zealand to Newfoundland, from Fiji to the Aleutians, and paired them with insightful ruminations on the science and poetry of waves. With work from world-renowned photographers such as Art Brewer, Jeff Divine, Wayne Levin, and Joel Meyerowitz, Waves will captivate all those with a passion for the sea. Top to learn more

A brief comment
This is a very beautiful photo book on a very specialized topic--the photos are exclusively those of ocean waves. There aren't even any surfers in the photos, although there is one or two with a pod of dolphins, and various backdrops are sometimes used, but the waves themselves are truly the protagonists in most of the pictures. The photos show surfing and beach locations all over the world, including famous places like Weimea Bay in Hawaii as well as those I was less familiar with, such as the location in Tahiti, which has very beautiful waves and was featured in a number of the photos. One striking aspect of the photos is how much the colors of the waves vary, from light sky-blue to a deep marine and saphire blue to a dark, mossy green color. I don't know if this is more from the light or the type of photo emulsion used, or both, but just the spectrum of color possibilities is as varied and diverse as the waves themselves. Not all the waves are big; some are just...

Beautiful Photos
I bought this book because I saw it for sale when I was in Hawaii, but didn't want to carry it home with me and risk the chance of it getting banged up in transit. The photos are beautiful. The only thing I don't like about this book is that some of the photos run from one page to the next, which means that there's a big crease down the center of some of the really great photos. It's a great coffee table book, especially for those of us who live far from the ocean and need a reminder of its beauty.

Just what it says no more no less
You want the ocean, here it is. No birds, no ambient music, no storms, no foghorns. Just the ocean. So what else do you REALLY need?? Ever sleep on the beach at night? I have and this is what it sounds like. This is fantastic for use at work. I recently downloaded his "rain" mp3 and it's brilliant. My cubicle buddies at work ask me how I can stand listening to rain and waves and nothing else, until they try it. I can focus like a laser beam when I listen to those 2 tracks.

Product Description

From Susan Casey, bestselling author of The Devil’s Teeth, an astonishing book about colossal,  ship-swallowing rogue waves and the surfers who seek them out.

For centuries, mariners have spun tales of gargantuan waves, 100-feet high or taller. Until recently scientists dismissed these stories—waves that high would seem to violate the laws of physics. But in the past few decades, as a startling number of ships vanished and new evidence has emerged, oceanographers realized something scary was brewing in the planet’s waters. They found their proof in February 2000, when a British research vessel was trapped in a vortex of impossibly mammoth waves in the North Sea—including several that approached 100 feet.

As scientists scramble to understand this phenomenon, others view the giant waves as the ultimate challenge. These are extreme surfers who fly around the world trying to ride the ocean’s most destructive monsters. The pioneer of extreme surfing is the legendary Laird Hamilton, who, with a group of friends in Hawaii, figured out how to board suicidally large waves of 70 and 80 feet. Casey follows this unique tribe of people as they seek to conquer the holy grail of their sport, a 100-foot wave.

In this mesmerizing account, the exploits of Hamilton and his fellow surfers are juxtaposed against scientists’ urgent efforts to understand the destructive powers of waves—from the tsunami that wiped out 250,000 people in the Pacific in 2004 to the 1,740-foot-wave that recently leveled part of the Alaskan coast.

Like Jon Krakauer’s Into Thin Air, The Wave brilliantly portrays human beings confronting nature at its most ferocious. Top to learn more

The Discovery Channel meets ESPN
Susan Casey's THE WAVE features an introduction that would be right at home in a Tom Clancy thriller. Following the headline "57.5 (deg) N, 12.7 (deg) W, 175 MILES OFF THE COAST OF SCOTLAND... FEBRUARY 8, 2000," she launches into sixteen pages of prose describing a handful of shipping disasters.Have you ever been on an ocean liner where half the passengers were turning green with nausea as the ship pitched and rolled in 25-foot swells? That's nothing. Dead calm by comparison.Monster waves, the height of a ten-story office building (and taller) have taken ships --big, huge ships-- and pounded, pummeled, and overturned them, split them in half and buried them forever along with everyone aboard under thousands of tons of water, and it happens with a frequency that you can't begin to imagine.I read those first pages, and by the time I got to Chapter one, I was electrified. This was going to be a page-turner of the first order.Only it...

Well written ultra press release for The Laird...Ultimate Wave Guy (TM)
First things first. The Wave was fun to read because Casey is a very solid writer. She knows how to put a sentence, paragraph, and tale together. Technically, her writing is near impeccable; it's a pleasure to read a galley proof and see almost no errors, compared to so many authors who apparently can't write ten words without needing spellcheck and an editor. So from that standpoint, this was one of the best advance copies I've seen of anything over the past few years.I haven't read Casey's other book, about sharks, nor have I read her as editor of Oprah's O Magazine (I have trouble picking up a publication that has its owner on the cover every issue, who also named it after herself). After reading The Wave, I might just check out Casey's other writing, as she understands what good scribbling is all about. She always keeps things moving, rarely bogging down in arcane detail even when discussing the science of climatology, waves, etc, and has a fine eye for the telling...

Excellent, Great Sound!
Great sound, great price. This is a simple recording: just one very long (73 minute) track of ocean waves with no interruptions. Only the sound of the surf is featured. There are no bird sounds and no music. With headphones, the clarity and realism is amazing. The "Sounds of Nature by Joe Baker" series is great. Other favorites from this series: "Thundering Rainstorm" and "Thunderstorm by the Sea."

One of my favorites.
This may be one of my favorites in this series. The sound quality is awesome and there is only the sound of the waves, none of that annoying birds in the background squawking. When I put on my headphones, it sounds like I'm there rather than in a cramped dark office, except that sometimes, it may want me to fall asleep instead.

Wonderfully relaxing ocean sound
I am really enjoying this sound! I play it to help me fall asleep and it is so soothing. It's just the ocean, nothing else, and it is perfect.

Taste of the sea
Suzy Lee's Wave is gorgeous, so expressive you can almost taste the salty water reaching the beach - and the girl. A lovely little story about how you acquire knowledge about this world, something you can't do without taking some risk. For children who don't read yet, and for adults any age who love beauty.

Delightful Picture Book
They say a picture is worth a thousand words and this book proves it. There are no words, but the story is clear as you look at the pictures. The illustrations are delightful and the story cute. Much loved by my family.

return to my childhood
This book is very special, like "Zoo" (By Susy Lee). The girl plays with the wave among the pages, and the wave finds the way to enter in the girl's world. The world of the girl is on the right pages, and the wave's world is on the left pages... It is a book that invites me to remember my childhood, playing with the waves. The message is very tender and ingenious and the illustrations are very very nice and expressive.http://www.suzyleebooks.com/books/wave/
